Description
This project, which will enroll 330 ALS patients at 17 clinical sites across the U.S., tests the efficacy of the investigational drug IGF-I (Insulin-like Growth Factor) for slowing the progression of ALS. IGF-I is a growth factor that has shown promise in protecting the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The study is a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in which intervention lasts for 24 months. Participants inject the treatment twice daily for 24 months.

Role of the Berman Center
The Berman Center conducts 5 study visits and 3 study telephone calls during the 24-month follow-up period. At the study visits, Berman Center doctors, research nurses, and physical and respiratory therapists will do blood tests, qualitative muscles tests, a forced vital capacity test, and weight and vital sign measurement. This study is closed to enrollment.
