| Chiropractic, Medication, and Self-Care
for Acute Neck Pain |
| |
|
Participants must be at least 18 years old with a
recent on-set of neck pain (duration 3-12 weeks). They must not
have had previous neck surgery, and must not be receiving on-going
neck-pain treatment from other providers. |
| |
|
Prospective participants first will complete a screening to determine
if they are eligible. Those who are eligible, and who consent to
be part of the study, will be randomized to one of three treatments:
Chiropractic manipulation, medication, self-care advice. There
will be up to 12 weeks of chiropractic treatment, with the exact
number of treatments to be determined by the chiropractor. Those
randomized to receive medication may be prescribed acetaminophen,
NSAIDs, muscle relaxants and/or mild narcotics, with activity modification
as necessary. Those randomized to self-care advice will attend
two one-hour sessions about work ergonomics and daily life activities.
They will practice recommended postures and body mechanics, and
receive a take-home booklet. |
| |
|
Participants will complete questionnaires about their condition
seven times over one year (twice at the beginning of the study,
and then at 3, 6, 12, 26, and 52 weeks after treatment begins).
Participants also will have the mobility of their neck tested at
the beginning of the study, and then 6 weeks after treatment begins. |
